Resetting and Learning Mode
Well, where have I been the last few months?
Recharging my batteries!
I took a break from the corporate world in order to reset and re-evaluate what’s next in my life. Earlier this year I made some major changes which included moving to be closer to family and getting my own place. My full-time job was significantly draining me and I lost a sense of fulfillment. It got me thinking, “what’s really next for me?”
Once I left the job, I found myself resting A LOT! You never know how burnt out you are until you find yourself at a full stop. I spent my first month being “non-productive”: catching up on shows/movies, reconnecting with friends, attending Muay Thai classes regularly, and eating good food.
After that, I went back into learning and exploring mode. (Oh, I was also unpacking and organizing my space. Unpacking takes forever but I finally finished! Woot!)
On the tech side, I’ve been doing some reading. I watched a few lectures on AI and what’s behind the scenes. I also went to a conference on Computer Graphics, which unfortunately was very AI-focused and less artsy. (Did you know learning models hallucinate? It’s fascinating!! But I’m starting to get AI exposure fatigue. More on that in another post.)
I also haven’t been too focused on my Muay Thai influenced art. I lacked inspiration and motivation leading up to my break. Because Muay Thai art was where I got my start in Instagram, I was starting to feel the pressure to create another piece that will touch the hearts of the community and get more reach. That pressure while lacking motivation is dangerous and unhealthy. Instead, I decided to explore and try new arts/crafts/media, hoping re-energize my creativity. So far…
I learned how to crochet and made various amigurumi dolls.
Really happy with how these two came out but still lots to learn! I’m moving on to more vintage looking dolls.
I picked up acrylic markers and am falling in love with the process.
It reduces some of the things I found challenging with painting (mixing colors and brush dexterity).
There’s also picking up Procreate Dreams, painting with traditional gouache, felt needling, and clay. It’s been a humbling experience picking up these new things. But my sketches lately have felt more dynamic and fun as a result! I attribute that to getting a different perspective on things. I’ll share more in an upcoming post as well!
Overall, it’s been a nice break to intentionally go back into amateur mode. I remind myself it’s ok to experiment and make mistakes. Because… how else are you going to learn?
